Just thought everyone would like to read a great letter one of our clients wrote to the Delaware County SPCA, thanking them for their rescue dog, Bosco. We are proud to care for Bosco, and many of you may have met him over this year at Anne's training classes, or playing with your own dogs at The Barker Lounge. Enjoy the letter!

Dear Delaware County SPCA, 8/16/10
Well it has been one year since my old family dropped me off at your doors. Boy, I was really scared, but that did not last long. This new family came in and saw me, they said I was just what they were looking for, so they took me outside to see if I would like to live with them. I guess they really liked me because two days later my adopted dad and two legged brother came to get me. I have a mom and a dad, and a brother and an annoying sister (the brother said to write that). I also live next door to 3 more kids, 2 of them are two legged, but most of the time they are on fours like me, mom calls them babies. All I know is that mom says she really loves me because I have so much patience with them, whatever that means, I just know I have to be nice to these hairless human puppies and never steal their food. In return, they let me give them lots of wet labbie kisses.
I acted really shy for the first few days, I did not let my new family on to true labbie behavior until they were nice and relaxed. Just when they thought I was this nice and quiet dog, I let my true self out. I stole every q-tip and sock that I could find, in fact my mom keeps talking about getting stock in Fruit of the Loom because I put so many holes in everything. I don’t know why she wants to stock up on this Fruit, I don’t even eat the stuff, I just try to eat socks.
No really, I love my new family and I know they love me. I get to go to a daycare just for dogs and I also went to obedience classes. My daycare teacher and my obedience school teacher say I have an attention span problem, I have no idea what they are talking about, I know I just want to do something different every 3 seconds.
My dad says he could never find a buddy better than me, wow that is so cool to hear because I love him too. I am so glad you let me go home with this family and that you took good care of me until my furever home found me.
Oh and by the way, the ANNOYING sister, well I do love her too, she made a really cool 2nd birthday party for me. She even asked mom to buy me a bone cake with my name on it.
Well, thank you, and I hope all of the other dogs get a family like I did, because it is so much fun to be loved.
Love,
Bosco Capone

Exciting things are happening this summer at Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital!
We are very proud to announce the addition of Dr. Kelly Slattery to our veterinary staff. Kelly is a lifelong resident of the Philadelphia area, and is thrilled to be practicing near her hometown. Read about Kelly on our website, and stop by and introduce yourself. Don't worry, all of your favorite doctors are still on staff; the addition of Kelly to our practice will provide our patients with more appointment opportunities. Please contact Danielle, our Client Care Coordinator, if you have any questions or concerns.
The other exciting news for the summer is the introduction of our new Sunday phone hours. The office will now be open on Sundays from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM. The office will be staffed with a receptionist and a veterinary technician. This is the perfect time to stop by and pick up food or medicines, make appointments for the week, or get any questions or concerns answered. We have dog training classes going on on Sundays, as well as technician visits for nails, laser therapy, suture removals, fluid administration, etc. It is a great day to get your technician appointments out of the way! If you have an emergency, our staff will be able to guide you to the best emergency facility for your pet. We will not have doctor's appointments on Sundays, but our staff will be able to consult with one of our doctors, if necessary. We hope that these new Sunday hours will provide you with added convenience.
Just some reminders:
Please keep your pet on flea and tick preventative all year around, but especially in the summer. We have had a very big tick issue this spring, and Lyme Disease as well as other tick diseases are finding our patients every week. Don't forget about Heartworm prevention as well. The mosquitos are out in full force. Our practice is currently treating 2 dogs for Heartworm Disease. The prevention of this serious disease is so important!
If you are travelling with your pet this summer, dont forget our phone number and a copy of your pet's vaccines. You can get all of your information on Pet Portals. If your dog gets car sick - now is the time to ask us about Cerenia - a great medication for motion sickness -- is is NOT a sedative, it actually will help the nausea associated with motion and won't make your dog groggy.
At "Fireworks Time", the best place for your dog is in a cool, dark, small area. Studies have shown that dogs with noise anxiety can be comforted much like babies with colic or autistic children. Dimming lights, muffling the sound and using a dark enclosure can help to restore comfort to many anxious dogs. We believe this is why many dogs will crawl under the bed -- a dark, small hiding place can be as comfortable to a dog as a human wrapping himself up tight in a blanket. The DAP pheromone collar can also help! Ask us!
Please sign up for a Pet Portal -- there is a link at the top of the home page that will direct you to our Pet Portal website, where you can sign up for free. The great thing about Pet Portals is that you have easy access to our computer records on your pet. You can easily check vaccine history, medication history and diet history. You can also post great pictures of your pet and take care of any housekeeping issues to keep your account up to date. You can send us messages, ask questions and make appointments. Through Pet Portals, we also have an on-line store. This store carries many of our products, and you can have them shipped directly to you. We also carry many products that we do not have in our hospital, as well as horse products! Check it out. You will be pleased with our low prices.
We know that in this "Information Age", most people love communicating on the web or via email. Please feel free to email us thru Pet Portals, or by using our email, info@stoneycreekveterinary.com. On the "Contact Us" page of this website, there is a list of all of our direct emails.
Be a "fan" of Stoney Creek on Facebook! We have enjoyed putting our Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital Facebook page together, and especially love the comments from our clients and the pictures of your pets. We try to use the Facebook page to send out regular updates about our hospital. Since many of you are not in the office regularly (thank goodness for healthy pets!!), the Facebook page is a great way to keep in touch. Specials and Coupons will also be advertised on Facebook.
As always, the doctors and staff of Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital are proud to provide Delaware County pets with the best possible veterinary care. Enjoy your summer and stay safe! --- Dr. Jennifer Johnson

November 2009
Some of the staff at Stoney Creek were fortunate enough to attend a conference in Atlantic City on Nov 7th featuring Cesar Millan. Our amazing trainer Miss Anne was one of a select few who attended a meet and greet after the show with Cesar himself! See picture below. All that attended had a fantastic time.
September 2009
It is hard to believe that summer is almost over, and fall is upon us! I hope that everyone had a great summer vacation, and all of your family pets continue to be happy and healthy.
There is always something exciting happening at Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital -- first, this fall we will continue renovations to improve our reception area and waiting area. Please be patient with us, as our contractors will be "working around us" so we can continue to provide care for your pets during the construction period. I know that everyone is going to love our new plans when they are finished, so please be patient and stop in and see our progress!
Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital is again a proud sponsor of the HEADstrong Foundation’s 3rd Annual Nick Colleluori Lacrosse Tournament which will take place on October 10th and 11th at Ridley High School. The tournament will feature 18 Division I and Division III college lacrosse teams and raises money for Blood Cancer research. HEADstrong was founded by Nick Colleluori, a Stoney Creek client, during his battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We are proud to sponsor HEADstrong, as they and all of us fight for a cure for this terrible disease. Lymphoma and blood cancers are the number one cancers of dogs and cats. Stoney Creek continues to recognize that many of our patients have been affected by these cancers. Check out the HEADstrong website at www.headstrongfoundation.org
Speaking of events, Stoney Creek will be participating in the Delaware County SPCA’s Bark in the Park which will be on Saturday, October 17th. See www.delcospca.org for details. One of our veterinarians will be on hand for Rabies vaccination and microchipping.
Stoney Creek also sponsored the first American Cancer Society Relay for Life Dog Walk this past August in Norwood Park. For the inaugural event, it was a great success, and we are sure that next year this event will continue to grow. Watch our website for more news.
Last, it is not too late to register for Anne Havey’s doggy field trip. Anne, our trainer, has a dog training walk planned on September 20th, which will take place at the Tinicum Wildlife Preserve. Lunch and demonstrations will be back at Stoney Creek. This event is filling up fast, see Anne’s training webpage or call the office for information. Fall is the perfect time to renew your commitment to your furry friend – it is cooler, they need the exercise, and training your dog is fun!
I hope that everyone continues to have a healthy and safe year. As we rush around in “back to school” mode, don’t forget about keeping your pets healthy and safe. We at Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital are always here to help – call or email any time! Thank you again for the privilege of caring for your pets,
Sincerely,
Dr. Jennifer Johnson

Updates to our website --- check out our redesigned "Links" page. Nina worked long and hard to develop a comprehensive Links page -- pretty much any website that we think is helpful is listed, along with a short description of the site. Now it will be easier to jump from our home-site to another site for information about your pet!
Summer is coming -- be sure that you have your flea/tick and heartworm prevention for your dogs and cats. You may have read that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is re-evaluating adverse events reported from topical flea and tick preventatives. Please consider using our doctor's expertise in establishing a flea/tick and heartworm prevention program for your pet. Not every product that you find 'over the counter' will be benefical for your pet. Please ask the doctors for advice -- let's work together to be sure your pet is safe, as well as protected!!!
April 2009
Happy Spring to all of our clients and their pets! We are very excited to report that our doctors are starting to perform Stem-Cell Transplants to treat chronic osteoarthritis conditions in dogs and cats. Stem cell use is all over the news, mostly because of the ethical issues in using embroyos to harvest Stem cells. In pets and horses, there is a better way, that has been showing great promise, and this is using the patient's OWN stem-cells.
Our first patient, a Labrador Retriever with severe elbow and hip arthritis, is now 90 days post stem-cell treatment, and he is doing great! Check out our page about Stem-Cell Therapy, and ask the doctor's about this treatment today!
February 2009

Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital is proud to announce the addition of Dr. Barbara Tallant to our staff, beginning this month! Dr. Tallant may already be known to many clients, as she has practiced locally for over 10 years. She is thrilled to be joining the Stoney Creek Team, and we are sure your pets will be just as excited to meet her! Check out her bio on the "Doctors" page of our website, and stop by and introduce yourself!
We hope that everyone is enjoying the new "Pet Portals" which allows easy and confidential access to your pet's vaccine and medical records. We have gotten great feedback from our clients about our website, the Pet Portals, as well as our online store. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please drop us an email -- we love to hear from you!
The doctors and staff of Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital wish all of you and your pets the very best this Holiday Season. Thank you for your support and for entrusting your pet's health to us this year and may the New Year bring good health and happiness to all!

| Folcroft K-9 cop saves day for severely ailing shih tzu |
| By Loretta Rodgers, Times Correspondent |
Riki, an 8-year-old German shepherd, right, is credited with saving the life of 19-month-old shih tzu Cocomo, held by Folcroft police Officer Gene Mackey.
FOLCROFT It is not uncommon for a police dog to be recognized for assisting an officer with an arrest or other in-the-line-of duty work.
But Riki, an 8-year-old German shepherd, handled by borough police Officer Eugene Mackey, recently went above and beyond the call of duty when he saved the life of a fellow canine.
Cocomo, a 19-month-old shih tzu, owned by borough residents Albert and Dottie Feudo, became seriously ill in early April. The pup could not keep food or water down, had severe diarrhea and was extremely lethargic.
The Feudos took Cocomo to the Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital in Morton where she was originally diagnosed and treated for gastritis and a bowel infection.
Within 24 hours, Cocomo's condition deteriorated to a point where she was rushed back to the veterinary hospital for further testing.
"We were so frightened," said Dottie Feudo. "Additional tests showed a serious bowel obstruction and the next thing we knew, Cocomo was on the operating table fighting for her life."
During the surgery, Dr. Jennifer Johnson determined Cocomo's life was in danger because of an enormous loss of blood and dangerously low protein levels. Cocomo also had a nearly 5-inch area of necrotic bowel tissue coupled with acute inflammation.
"It was obvious that without fresh blood, Cocomo would not survive," said Johnson. "She needed something drastic and immediate."
It was then that Stoney Creek veterinary technician Kaitlyn Mackey, the sister of Officer Mackey, sprung into action.
"My sister called and told me about Cocomo," Mackey said. "So I immediately rushed Riki to the hospital and he donated a pint of blood, which eventually saved the life of the puppy. The entire situation is just unbelievable and Riki and I were really glad to be able to help."
Watching little Cocomo romp and play with her grateful owners makes it almost impossible to believe that a mere eight weeks ago, she was so desperately ill.
At a recent Folcroft Borough Council meeting, the Feudos were on hand to publicly thank Mackey and Riki for helping to save the life of their beloved pet.
"This is a small town community and I just love our police force and always have," said Feudo. "I have a special bond with officer Mackey and now Cocomo has a big blood brother in Riki.
"My husband and I are grateful beyond words to Dr. Johnson and everyone involved. You know, before the blood transfusion, Cocomo almost never barked. But now she won't stop. And her bark is big, loud and booming just like that of her older brother." | |
MAY, 2008
May has been an exciting and busy month at Stoney Creek Veterinary Hospital!
First, on May 15th, we had our annual inspection for AAHA-accreditation, and we are very pleased to announce that we passed with flying colors! We are very proud to continue our AAHA membership, as this shows our continued committment to providing the highest quality care for your pet!
The rains did not dampen our spirit, as on Sunday, May 18th, we had a great turnout for our community open house. ACDC was on hand with pets for adoption, the Delaware County SPCA braved the weather and brought some wonderful pets in need of homes, and the Bailey Foundation was a huge hit with over a dozen beautiful parrots to see and touch and learn about! Clients loved the hospital tours, where they could get a good look at "behind the scenes", and see our surgery, dental, radiology and treatment areas. We raised $250.00 for the Folcroft Police K-9 unit, and were proud to have the officers and their K-9 partners on hand. Thank you to everyone who donated items for our raffles, and helped in any way to make our open house a huge success!
Check back, as we will post pictures on the website soon!
